EPOC (Explaining and Predicting the Ocean Conveyor) is a 5-year research project funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme. Involving 21 institutions from France, Germany, Norway, UK, USA and Canada, and led by Universität Hamburg, EPOC aims to generate a new concept of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), its function in the Earth system and how it impacts weather and climate.
EPOC was funded through the Horizon Europe cluster 6 call on “Key polar processes driving regional & global climate change”. The project is a member of the collaborative family of Arctic- and Antarctic-focused research initiatives funded by the European Commission, known as the EU Polar Cluster. EPOC is also part of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance (AAORA) which supports the implementation of the Galway and Belem Statements on Atlantic Research and Innovation Cooperation.
EPOC’s work also contributes to global efforts to better observe, model, understand and predict ocean circulation.
